Geopolitics is no longer confined to diplomats, intelligence agencies, or university classrooms. Decisions made in capitals thousands of miles away increasingly shape boardrooms, supply chains, financial markets, technological innovation, and public policy around the world. As global complexity grows, understanding these connections has become an essential skill for leaders across business, government, and academia.
Yet recognizing the importance of geopolitics is only the beginning. The greater challenge is developing a disciplined way to analyze an increasingly complex world without becoming overwhelmed by the daily news cycle. Founded by Steven A. Smith, Ph.D. and Deborah J. Allen, MBA, the Institute for Applied Geopolitics (IAG) was established to meet that challenge.
As an independent and non-partisan educational institute, IAG’s mission is to advance the understanding and application of geopolitics through structured analytical methods. Their goal is to equip professionals to better understand global change, assess geopolitical risk, and make more informed decisions through objective analysis and structured approaches to contemporary international issues. This emphasis on applied geopolitics is what distinguishes the Institute for Applied Geopolitics.
Applied geopolitics is more than a field of study. It is a disciplined approach to analyzing an increasingly complex world and translating geopolitical insight into better decision-making. While many academic programs emphasize geopolitical theory, historical context, or the interpretation of current events, IAG teaches structured analytical methodologies that professionals can apply to real-world challenges.
Rather than focusing solely on what is happening today, students learn to apply frameworks designed for understanding why events unfold, how political, economic, technological, geographic, and security factors interact, and how those dynamics shape future outcomes. The objective is not to interpret headlines, but to develop analytical processes that support strategic planning, geopolitical risk assessment, and informed decision-making in uncertain environments.
A defining feature of the curriculum is that its courses are built on IAG proprietary frameworks. Rather than relying on existing academic models, learners are introduced to proprietary methodologies that can be applied to conflict analysis, geopolitical risk assessment, strategic planning, strategic foresight, and executive decision support. These frameworks provide systematic processes that professionals can integrate into organizational decision-making long after completing the program.
The Institute serves a diverse community of professionals, including business executives, corporate strategy teams, financial institutions, supply chain leaders, military and intelligence analysts, government agencies, policy advisors, consultants, graduate students, and researchers. Although these audiences represent different sectors, they confront the same reality: geopolitical developments influence organizational success regardless of industry or sector.
Beyond its online courses, the Institute for Applied Geopolitics partners with universities, corporations, government agencies, and professional organizations to deliver executive education programs tailored to their strategic priorities. Through its certificate programs in Applied Geopolitics and Applied Intelligence, specialized courses, and organizational learning initiatives, IAG equips professionals with analytical capabilities that can be directly integrated into planning, risk management, and long-term strategy.
The Institute’s growing reputation is built upon the expertise of its multidisciplinary faculty.
Steven Smith, who serves as IAG’s Executive Director. His career spans more than twenty-five years across academia, industry, and international consulting. His professional experience includes engineering and management positions with Procter & Gamble and PepsiCo, faculty appointments at Rutgers University, Florida Atlantic University, and the University of New Orleans, a Visiting Scholar appointment at Columbia University, and his current role as Dean of the School of Business and Engineering at Seminole State College of Florida. Throughout his career, he has advised Fortune 500 companies while integrating geopolitical analysis into strategic planning and organizational decision-making.
Dr. Smith is also the author of Mastering Geopolitical Strategy, released this year by Kendall Hunt Publishing Company. The book is based on the same philosophy underpinning the Institute’s mission: geopolitics should not remain an abstract academic discipline but should serve as a practical framework for navigating global complexity and improving decision-making. His scholarship reinforces the IAG’s commitment to producing thought leadership and advancing new approaches to applied geopolitical education.
Alongside Dr. Smith, the Institute’s continued growth is supported by co-founder Deborah Allen, who serves as Chief of Staff. Drawing on more than fifteen years of experience across corporate, entrepreneurial, and startup environments, Ms. Allen oversees IAG’s strategic initiatives, including operations, marketing, enrollment, partnerships, and business development. She works closely with faculty and organizational partners to expand IAG’s educational programs and ensure the Institute’s analytical expertise is translated into practical learning experiences.
Together with a faculty whose expertise spans intelligence analysis, strategic foresight, geoeconomics, emerging technologies, and security, the Institute develops original research, methodologies, and training programs designed to help professionals make better decisions in an increasingly uncertain global environment.
Organizations today must contend with shifting alliances, economic coercion, sanctions, supply chain disruptions, cybersecurity threats, resource competition, and evolving political environments. Traditional functional expertise alone is not sufficient to anticipate how these developments interact or how they may influence organizational outcomes.
Applied geopolitical analysis provides a structured way of making sense of these challenges. It enables decision-makers to move beyond reactive responses and instead develop disciplined processes for evaluating uncertainty, identifying strategic opportunities, and preparing for multiple possible futures.
The Institute for Applied Geopolitics continues to expand its mission to make geopolitical analysis accessible, practical, and directly applicable for professionals across business, government, academia, and the nonprofit sector.
